The Testaments

thetestaments So OBVIOUSLY the book and the tv show are completely different.

I started reading The Testaments just before the tv show premiered and boy... was that a mistake. I was getting myself so confused because my brain would be stuck on the storyline of the show but then at night I'd be reading about the same characters and it'd be a whole other journey.

However, I don't hate either.

I'm really enjoying the show and wondering how the girls will move forward and break through (destroy?) the boundaries Gilead has taught them to abide by. I'm especially curious about the role of the Aunts in the next season.

As for the book, we read it from the perspectives of Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy (who is not the same Daisy in the show) — AND not only that, what we read are their witness accounts presented at a Gileadian Studies seminar. A lovely nod to how The Handmaid's Tale was presented via Offred/June's tape recordings.

Overall, I enjoyed the POV from Agnes in both the book and tv — it's interesting to see it from her point of view vs. June's. We really are products of conditioning in our youth.

I'm going to say the book is definitely worth a re-read.
